Tobias Madison – Melt down candy

„But sometimes, we be playing the politics too much and forget who we are just to win. Fuck winning. Fuck looking cool. Fuck looking cool. Fuck being cool. Fuck all that, bruh! I’ve been sitting here to give y’all my truth even at the risk of my own life. Even at the risk of my own success, my own career. I’ve been sitting here to give y’all the truth. Its a new world, Hillary Clinton, it’s a new world. Feelings matter. Because guess what? Everybody in middle America felt a way and they showed you how they felt. Feelings matter, bro. It’s a new world. It’s a new world, Barack. It’s a new world, Jay-Z. Hey don’t send killers at my head, bro. This ain’t the Malcolm X movie. We growing from that moment. Let Ye be Ye. And wait a second. Do y’all agree with that? Let Ye be Ye. Wait a second. I ain’t hear enough screams on that. Let Ye be Ye.“

- Kanye West, Meltdown Speech at Sacramento Concert, 20th of November 2016

Perhaps 2016 marked the moment when honesty became a style, pulling the strings from the stitches of a transition that started with the 90ies obsession with authenticity as something that can be applied, marketed, sold, voted for. But what happens when the good honest people march along with the parade for a laugh, like Céline’s Ferdinand, gates shutting behind them, only to find themselves in war zone at the flip of a page? Kanye entered a mental institution after delivering his meltdown in Sacramento, the whole world watching as his delirium, the political delirium and the delirium in language became one and the same. The Fascists babble like Deleuze and Guattari, ISIS throws random stabs on London Bridge while posting cat videos, a surrealist wet dream? Reading the news feels more like Tristan Tzara. Getting rid of oneself remains the privilege of subjectivities that see their identity as mutable, re-definable, the rest should please shut up? Or was it the other way around? Of course one could also take a step into the distance and enjoy the perversion of the moment, doomsday bells matching the rhythm of Gucci loafers clacking against venetian marble.

To cut to the chase: Honesty & Art & Language. Big topics for a seminar, probably too big, yet to ignore them would be as foolish as thinking one could fully disentangle them.

This seminar will be an introduction into the mystical powers that art & language wield upon each other. In a moment of delirium in language, the writing artist, the artist-critic symbiosis, the novel as artist, rapid fire tweet rant chants, the screenwriter, the comic script editor etc are all viable sites that need to be re-examined. To be fully frank, I wanna get the students to write, to use language as a tool that may or may not influence their work, but as a tool that is accessible and can be put to work outside of canonized art world lingo.
