Watchers at the Gates of the Mind

"As an artist your responsibility is to be irresponsible. As soon as you talk about social or political responsibility you've amputated the best limbs you've got as an artist. You are plugging into a very restrictive system that is going to push and mold you and is going to make your art totally ineffective."
-David Cronenberg

"There are people who prefer to say ‘Yes’, and there are people who prefer to say ‘No’. Those who say ‘Yes’ are rewarded by the adventures they have, and those who say ‘No’ are rewarded by the safety they attain."
-Keith Johnstone

“In the case of the creative mind, it seems to me, the intellect has withdrawn its watchers from the gates, and the ideas rush in pell-mell, and only then does it review and inspect the multitude. You worthy critics, or whatever you may call yourselves, are ashamed or afraid of the momentary and passing madness which is found in all real creators, the longer or shorter duration of which distinguishes the thinking artist from the dreamer. Hence your complaints of unfruitfulness, for you reject too soon and discriminate too severely.”
-Friedrich Schiller

This LabZone is a combined writing workshop and film club. It is designed to appropriate improvisatory techniques that foster spontaneity and narrative skills. The best 20th Century Filmmakers will be our guiding prophets.
We will employ practical tricks for encouraging spontaneity and the imagination. Through in-class writing practices, we will try to capture the unconscious unawares.

We will develop practical tools that help switch off the negative self-critical mind, unblock the imagination, and welcome the unconscious as our close companion.

In addition, we will familiarise ourselves with the history of cinema. The first half of every LabZone will be spent watching and appreciating great movies.
